Thumb Cactus grows up to 20cm, watering every 14 days. It is suitable for indoor environments and safe for pets.
Unlike many tropical plants, Thumb Cactus tolerates watering mistakes. Best for beginners. Unlike many popular species, Thumb Cactus is safe to keep around pets. Without adequate drainage, root rot can develop within 28 days.
How to Care for Thumb Cactus?
TLDR: Thumb Cactus needs Bright indirect, watering every 14 days, and temperatures between -4-30Β°C with 40-70% humidity.
How Often Should You Water Thumb Cactus?
In spring and summer, water thoroughly when the mix is completely dry, about every 2 weeks. Keep it dry in winter. Too much water is the main cause of rot.
How Much Light Does Thumb Cactus Need?
Full sun or strong light near a bright window. On very hot summer days, a little shade prevents sunburn.
What Is the Best Soil for Thumb Cactus?
Very porous cactus mix with plenty of grit or coarse sand, in a pot with a drainage hole.
What Pot Should You Use for Thumb Cactus?
A shallow clay pot with a drainage hole; because the stems sprawl, a hanging pot also works well.

What Is Thumb Cactus and Where Does It Come From?
Mammillaria matudae is a small cactus from central Mexico, found at 700 to 1,250 m in the states of Mexico, MichoacΓ‘n and Guerrero, in dry scrub. Its slender cylindrical stems are about 3 cm wide and 10 to 20 cm tall, covered in short white spines with one longer central spine. Over time it forms clusters, and the stems lean over and sprawl. In spring a ring of small bright pink flowers appears near the tip. It is named after the botanist Eizi Matuda. In Mexico it is a specially protected species.

What Diseases Commonly Affect Thumb Cactus?
TLDR: Thumb Cactus is susceptible to 4 known diseases. Monitor regularly for early detection.
Root Rot
Root rot is a serious fungal disease that affects the root system of plants, causing them to decay and die. It is primarily caused by overwatering, poor drainage, or soil-borne fungi such as Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium. The disease thrives in waterlogged conditions where roots are deprived of oxygen, making them susceptible to fungal infection.
Overwatering
Overwatering occurs when plants receive too much water, depriving roots of oxygen and causing root rot. This environmental stress is one of the most common causes of houseplant death, as waterlogged soil prevents roots from breathing and functioning properly.
Mealybugs
Mealybugs are small, soft-bodied insects covered with a white, waxy, cottony material. They are common pests of houseplants and outdoor plants in mild climates. These sap-sucking insects feed on plant tissue, causing damage, stunted growth, and can lead to plant death if left untreated. They produce sticky honeydew which attracts sooty mold.
Sunburn (Sun Scorch)
Sunburn or sun scorch is an environmental condition that occurs when plants are exposed to intense, direct sunlight beyond their tolerance level. This causes the breakdown of chlorophyll in the leaves, resulting in bleached, dried, and damaged foliage. The damage can happen rapidly, sometimes within just a few hours of exposure.
Fun Facts
It is named after Eizi Matuda, a Japanese botanist who worked in Mexico.
A British grower suggests planting it upside down in a hanging pot, with the stem pulled through the drainage hole.
In Mexico it is a specially protected species.
