What is Syagrus Palm?
Syagrus Palm (Syagrus) is a medium-care plant from the Arecaceae family. Syagrus is a genus of about 60 to 80 palms from South America, with one species in the Lesser Antilles, closely related to the coconut. Best known are the queen palm (S. romanzoffiana) and the licuri palm (S. coronata). Most have a single smooth, spineless trunk from 2 to over 30 m tall and feather-...
Syagrus Palm grows up to 15.0m, watering every 7 days. It is suitable for indoor environments and safe for pets.
Unlike many popular species, Syagrus Palm is safe to keep around pets. Without adequate drainage, root rot can develop within 14 days.
How to Care for Syagrus Palm?
TLDR: Syagrus Palm needs Bright indirect, watering every 7 days, and temperatures between -4-30ยฐC with 40-70% humidity.
How Often Should You Water Syagrus Palm?
Water about once a week, keeping the soil lightly moist in warm weather. Waterlogged soil rots the roots. Water sparingly in winter.
How Much Light Does Syagrus Palm Need?
Full sun or part shade outdoors. Indoors, bright filtered light near a sunny window.
What Is the Best Soil for Syagrus Palm?
Well-drained, fertile, slightly acid soil. In alkaline soil the leaves yellow from lack of iron, manganese and magnesium.
What Pot Should You Use for Syagrus Palm?
A deep pot with drainage holes; large species do better in the ground.

What Is Syagrus Palm and Where Does It Come From?
Syagrus is a genus of about 60 to 80 palms from South America, with one species in the Lesser Antilles, closely related to the coconut. Best known are the queen palm (S. romanzoffiana) and the licuri palm (S. coronata). Most have a single smooth, spineless trunk from 2 to over 30 m tall and feather-shaped leaves. Small cream-yellow flowers hang in clusters between the leaves, followed by small coconut-like fruits in green, orange or brown; in many species the kernel is edible. There are also nearly trunkless dwarf species and the small S. weddelliana, grown as a pot plant.
How to Propagate Syagrus Palm?
Seed
Germination is slow and uneven; be patient and never let the mix dry out.
- 1 Collect ripe fruits and remove the pulp
- 2 Soak the seeds in water for 2-3 days
- 3 Sow in moist, sandy mix, half-buried
- 4 Keep warm (25-35 ยฐC) and moist until they sprout

What Diseases Commonly Affect Syagrus Palm?
TLDR: Syagrus Palm is susceptible to 7 known diseases. Monitor regularly for early detection.
Spider Mites
Spider mites are tiny arachnids (less than 1/20 inch long) related to spiders and ticks that feed on plant sap. They thrive in hot, dry conditions and can cause significant damage to ornamental and vegetable plants. During severe infestations, crop losses can reach 14% or higher as these pests disrupt vital plant processes including photosynthesis, carbon dioxide absorption, and transpiration.
Phytophthora Root Rot
Disease caused by fungus-like organisms (oomycetes) that live in soil and can survive for years. It affects roots, stem, and crown of plants, being especially severe in waterlogged or poorly drained soils. It is the second most common cause of root rot in trees and shrubs.
Root Rot
Root rot is a serious fungal disease that affects the root system of plants, causing them to decay and die. It is primarily caused by overwatering, poor drainage, or soil-borne fungi such as Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium. The disease thrives in waterlogged conditions where roots are deprived of oxygen, making them susceptible to fungal infection.
Scale Insects
Scale insects are small sap-sucking pests that appear as brown, shell-like bumps on plant stems and leaves. There are over 25 species, divided into armored (hard) and unarmored (soft) scales. They feed by piercing plant tissue and extracting sap, which weakens the plant and can lead to yellowing, stunted growth, and even death if left untreated. They also excrete honeydew, which attracts ants and promotes sooty mold growth.
Fun Facts
Licuri nuts are the main food of the endangered Lear's macaw in Bahia, Brazil.
The genus is a close relative of the coconut (Cocos).
Some savanna species have almost no trunk, with leaves rising straight from the ground.
